Last Word is a daily word game where you race AI models to deduce a hidden word from escalating clues. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We don't ask for your name, email, or an account to play.

Who we are

Last Word ("we", "us") operates the Last Word web and mobile games. You can reach us at gary@playlastword.com.

What we collect

Stored on your device

• A random, anonymous ID we create so we can track your streak and progress. It isn't linked to your identity.
• Your current game state and your research-consent choice.

Your gameplay

When you play, we record how the round went, so the game works and so we can compare human and AI performance:

• The puzzle, which clues you revealed, and each guess you made (and whether it was right).
• Timing (how long between actions), the number of clues you needed, and your result.
• Your anonymous ID, your platform (web / iOS / Android), and coarse region and timezone.

We do not collect your name, email, precise location, or contacts, and we don't store your IP address as part of your gameplay record.

Why we collect it

• To run the game: your streak, the daily scoreboard, and the "how you did vs. the AI" result.
• To keep puzzles fair and fun by measuring how hard each one is for players.
• With your permission only, to build an aggregated research dataset (see below).

Research use (opt-in)

Last Word studies how people and AI models reason. If, and only if, you opt in, your anonymous gameplay may be included in an aggregated, de-identified research dataset that we may share with or license to third parties, such as AI research organisations, to study human and machine reasoning.

• Only data from players who have opted in is ever included.
• It is shared in aggregate / de-identified form, never in a way that identifies you.
• Consent is off by default. We ask once, and you can change your choice at any time; turning it off stops future inclusion.
• Declining has no effect on the game.

How we store it

Gameplay data is stored on our behalf by Supabase (a hosted database provider). We keep it only as long as needed to run the game and, for opted-in data, to maintain the research dataset. Access is restricted to our servers.

Your choices and rights

• Opt in or out of research use at any time.
• Request a copy or deletion of the data tied to your anonymous ID by emailing us.
• Depending on where you live (e.g. UK/EU or California), you may have additional rights over your data.

Children

Last Word isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We'll update this page if our practices change and revise the date above.
