Privacy Policy

Last updated: 22 January 2026

We want to be clear about how we handle your information. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it.

Who we are

Last Word is a daily word puzzle game. We don't require you to create an account or provide any personal information to play.

What information we collect

Information stored on your device

When you play Last Word, we store some information locally on your device (in your browser's storage). This includes:

  • Your game progress – so you can come back and finish a puzzle later
  • Your statistics – like your current streak, total wins, and best times
  • Your preferences – like whether you've seen the "how to play" guide
  • An anonymous ID – a random identifier we create to help us understand how the game is being used (we can't identify you from this)

This information stays on your device and never leaves your browser unless you clear your browser data.

Information we collect about how you play

When you play Last Word, we automatically collect some anonymous information about your gameplay. This helps us understand how people are using the game and improve it. We collect:

  • Game events – when you start a puzzle, complete it, or leave before finishing
  • Gameplay data – how long it took you to solve the puzzle, how many wrong guesses you made, whether you won or lost, and the difficulty of the puzzle
  • Technical information – your browser type, timezone, and general location (country and city level, not your exact address)

We don't collect your name, email address, or any other information that could identify you personally.

Push notifications (optional)

If you choose to enable push notifications for daily puzzle reminders, we'll store:

  • Your notification preferences – what times you want to be notified on weekdays and weekends
  • Your timezone – so we can send notifications at the right time for you
  • A subscription identifier – a technical identifier that lets us send you notifications

You can turn off notifications at any time, and we'll delete this information when you do.

Why we collect this information

We collect this information for a few simple reasons:

  1. To make the game work – we need to save your progress so you can come back to it
  2. To improve the game – understanding how people play helps us make puzzles better and fix bugs
  3. To send you notifications – only if you've asked us to

We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers. We don't use it to build a profile about you.

How we store your information

On your device

Most of your information is stored locally on your device using your browser's storage. This means:

  • It's private to you
  • It stays on your device
  • If you clear your browser data, it will be deleted

On our servers

We store anonymous analytics data on our servers (hosted by Vercel and Upstash). This includes:

  • Aggregated gameplay statistics
  • General location data (country/city level)
  • Technical information about how the game is accessed

This data is stored securely and is completely anonymous – we can't identify you from it.

If you've enabled push notifications, we also store your notification preferences and subscription information on our servers so we can send you reminders.

How long we keep your information

  • Information on your device – stays there until you clear your browser data or uninstall the app
  • Analytics data – we keep anonymous analytics data for as long as it's useful for improving the game
  • Notification data – deleted when you turn off notifications

Your rights

You're in control of your data. You can:

  • Clear your data – visit /clear-cache to remove most stored information (your game stats will be kept)
  • Turn off notifications – disable push notifications at any time in the app settings
  • Stop playing – if you stop using Last Word, your local data stays on your device until you clear it

Since we don't collect personal information that identifies you, there's no account to delete or personal data to request.

Cookies and tracking

We don't use cookies or any third-party tracking tools. We don't use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other advertising or tracking services.

The only thing we store locally is the information we've described above, which is necessary for the game to work.

Children's privacy

Last Word is designed for general audiences. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you're a parent and believe your child has provided us with information, please contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We might update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
